Clinical Waste
Clinical waste materials can be dangerous to anybody coming into contact with them unless made safe.
Clinical waste must be collected on its own. It can't go in your household bins or be collected with other waste. This is because it may be hazardous or infectious (unlike hygiene waste).
Clinical waste includes:
- Blood, excretions or bodily fluids
- Drugs or medicines
- Human tissue
- Swabs or dressings
- Infectious items
- Syringes, needles and other sharp instruments. (These items must be disposed of in a proper sharps bin, available on prescription)
These items, unless made safe, may harm anyone coming into contact with them.

Arrange a collection from home
We can collect 'household' clinical waste from domestic households. Examples of this include:
- dialysis waste
- treatment of infectious wounds (where the patient is self-treating and has asked for a collection)
Clinical waste is collected in a secure vehicle by a trained driver. The vehicle may be branded in the collection company's logo. Waste is treated and disposed of at a specialist treatment facility.
We are not responsible for collecting clinical waste produced by treatment from the NHS at home.
