Inspections can take place without prior warning. We visit 'high-risk' premises more often.

During an inspection, we check that:

• health, safety and welfare hazards are identified
• risks in the workplace are adequately controlled
• managers and employees have had adequate health and safety training
• it is understood why health and safety risk assessments are needed

A risk assessment looks at what could cause harm to people at work. It helps you to consider if you have taken enough precautions, or should do more, to prevent harm. View risk assessment advice from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

Accidents at work

Employers, and the self employed, must report serious work-related accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences to the Health and Safety Executive. This is called a 'RIDDOR' report.

The HSE has also improved its guidance on managing health and safety and controlling risks for businesses.

There are no changes to legal requirements, but the new design and structure will help businesses quickly find and understand what they must do to comply with health and safety law including;

• Easy-to-follow common workplace risks guidance, so businesses can quickly find specific advice on the risks in their workplace
• A new managing health and safety page to help businesses find the right guidance whether they are a small or low-risk business, a leader or manager overseeing their organisation's arrangements, or a director or board member leading on health and safety 

A new workplace, health, safety and welfare website brings guidance together on legal duties such as ventilation, temperature, safety signs and emergency procedures.
