Older people encouraged to attend free festive Golden Age event

Older people are encouraged to come along to a free festive event in Wisbech.

Golden Age presents

The Fenland District Council Golden Age event will include a carol performance from Wisbech Grammar School pupils, free refreshments and wrapped Christmas gifts generously donated by the Fenland community will be handed to attendees.

The presents, donated by the Fenland community, will be given to attendees of the Golden Age event on Friday, December 6.

Anyone aged over 60 or with an interest in services and support available to over 60s is welcome to attend the drop in event on Friday, December 6, 10am to 1pm, at Hudson Leisure Centre, Harecroft Road, Wisbech, PE13 1RL.

Cllr Sam Clark, Golden Age team leader, said: "We've been absolutely overwhelmed by the donations to the first ever Golden Age Christmas Appeal.

"It's so heartwarming to know that the community wanted to extend kindness to our older generation this Christmas.

"We look forward to seeing lots of visitors in Wisbech on Friday. Everyone is welcome. If you're over 60 please come along.

"As well as all the support from individuals lots of our organisations in our community have helped with donations and practical support. Our heartfelt thanks to all."

For the Golden Age Christmas Appeal, the council teamed up with Head to Toe, the official charity of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, which provides district nursing care for older people and those with long-term conditions, and the Trust's How Are You Fenland, which encourages people to get active, learn new skills and be creative.

Residents were invited to donate gifts at drop off points in Fenland libraries and Tesco stores in Wisbech and March. School pupils have also made and written in cards to be handed out at the event.

The council always gives away small free goodies at Golden Age events. The Christmas appeal was prompted by a comment from one visitor last year that the small wrapped giveaway gift would likely be her only present.
