A new political map for Fenland District Council

The Local Government Boundary Commission is the independent body that draws these boundaries. It has reviewed Fenland to make sure councillors will represent about the same number of electors, and that ward arrangements will help the council work effectively.  

The Commission has published final recommendations for changes to Fenland District Council. It says residents should be represented by 43 councillors. This is an increase of four from the current arrangements. 

There will be 18 wards. This is six fewer than there are now. The boundaries of all existing wards will change.

Publishing the recommendations Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the Commission, said:  "We are very grateful to people in Fenland. We looked at all the views they gave us. They helped us improve our earlier proposals. We believe the new arrangements will guarantee electoral fairness while maintaining local ties."   

219 comments from local residents and organisations helped decide the new wards. Changes in response to what local people said include:  

• Changes to the boundaries in March town centre to better reflect the communities in the town centre and use more identifiable boundaries  
• Increasing the number of councillors from the 42 proposed in our draft recommendations to 43, in order to allow a warding pattern for Parson Drove and Wisbech St Mary that better reflects rural communities

Parliament now needs to agree the changes. The new arrangements will then apply for the 2023 council elections.
