Railway Station Masterplans
We've set out a vision of how we want our local stations to improve
Rail is a vital mode of transport for local people, visitors and businesses. Train services provide a faster and convenient alternative to the car, and its usage continues to grow.
Our stations within Fenland (Manea, March and Whittlesea) link directly with the important cities of Cambridge, Peterborough and Ely. They also offer easy access to London mainline services to London Liverpool Street and London Kings Cross.
As the rail network is so important to Fenland, we must set clear priorities in order to make changes and improvements to the railway. This allows us to lobby government, the rail industry and private investors to make changes.
We have created masterplans for each of our stations. These explain future improvements that are needed such as car parking, lighting, waiting shelters, longer platforms, information points and improved access.
We have consulted on these masterplans and secured £9.5million of funding from the Combined Authority. This means the next stage of putting these exciting proposals into reality has begun.
We will be working very closely with the rail operators and Network Rail to deliver improvements. These are explained in more detail in the Masterplans below.
Project boards have been set up for each station with local councillors and key stakeholders. They will oversee the delivery and implementation of the schemes in each station masterplan. View more information about the projects and their progress to date (PDF) [392KB] .
Manea
At Manea station we will be:
- Delivering a new station car park and improving access to platforms
- Extending platforms to accommodate longer trains in the future
- Providing a new station waiting shelter

March
At March station we will be:
- Refurbishing existing buildings and creating community use buildings
- Providing a new station car park
- Refurbishing the existing canopy on the disused platform, alongside an art project

Whittlesea
At Whittlesey station we will be:
- Providing a new station car park and improving access
- Extending platforms to accommodate longer trains in the future
- Building a new pedestrian footbridge to reduce the need for people to use the level crossing
- Providing new station waiting shelters
