What happens to your recycling
The recyclable waste in your blue bin is taken to a transfer station in March. It is then moved to a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) which is run by our contractors Amey in Waterbeach. The material is sorted by type - by hand, and then machine. It is then sold to re-processors for manufacturing into recycled goods like newspapers, plastic bottles and glass products. View the process in action.
Schools and community groups
We have developed a variety of activities for teachers to use to engage pupils about recycling. These are tailored to a range of ages, starting from Reception up to Key Stage 4. View teacher recycling resources.
Our Getting It Sorted volunteers also offer free talks to schools and community groups. They can also loan games and workshop props to help teach about recycling. For more information please email gettingitsorted@fenland.gov.uk.
The Amey LG site in Waterbeach offer free visits to their education centre. Visitors can see their recycling machines in action and take part in fun interactive sessions. Full site tours are also available.

Composting
Garden waste is composted within the eastern region to produce a soil improver given to farmers and available at Cambridgeshire County Council Household Recycling Centres.
