Blue bin (recycling)
For recyclable items including cardboard, paper, aerosols, cans, tins, glass and plastics
Your blue recycling bin is for:
- Cans and tins
- Aluminium foil and trays
- Plastic bottles
- Plastic pots, tubs and trays
- Aerosols
- Cartons
- Glass bottles and jars
- Paper and cardboard
- Catalogues and phone books
You can also check what goes in your blue bin at www.gettingitsorted.org.
- No carrier bags, food waste, nappies or textiles please.
- No batteries. Never put batteries in your bins as they can cause fires in the bin lorries and at the waste and recycling site. This includes batteries in everyday items, such as mobile phones, toothbrushes, toys, e-cigarettes and vapes. They should be recycled at various locations including household recycling centres, supermarkets and shops. Check Recycle Now's Recycling Locator.
Leave recycling loose in the bin. Remove food and liquids from containers. Empty and rinse bottles, jars and containers.
Put clear bags with extra recycling next to the bin.
All other materials should be disposed of through:
- Your brown bin - for garden waste
- Your green bin - for non-recyclable rubbish. This includes carrier bags, nappies, cigarettes and food waste
- Local household recycling centres - for items you can't put in your bins at home
- Local textile and media banks - many take clothes, shoes, books, CD's and DVD's
- Terracycle - offering free programmes for hard-to-recycle items
Want to improve recycling where you live? We are looking for Getting It Sorted volunteers.
If your bin is too full
We offer free recycling sacks to leave out with your blue bin. You can order sacks online or collect them at one of our Customer Service Centres or Community Hubs.
