Watercourse Management and Flooding
Find out which agency to contact with watercourse management and flooding concerns
Cambridgeshire County Council is the Lead Local Flood Authority (under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010). They have the responsibility to manage the following types of flooding:
- Surface water flooding -includes internal property flooding from rain runoff from surfaces such as roads, roofs and patios. For more information refer to the Government's Long Term Flood Risk webpage. You can check by postcode or by using an interactive map.
- Ordinary watercourses - includes flooding from drains and ditches, but excludes main rivers that are managed by the Environment Agency. A map of the main rivers is available on the Environment Agency's website.
- Groundwater flooding -includes flooding caused by heavy and continuous rain capable of increasing the groundwater levels.
Fenland District Council do have some responsibility for ordinary and awarded watercourses. However, this only where riparian responsibilities apply associated with adjacent land that is owned or managed by the Council.
